Dental Implants Questions & Answers

If you are missing teeth you know that it can make it difficult to eat, speak and may cause you embarrassment. While missing teeth cause oral and systemic health problems, they also affect your quality of life. If you are seeking treatment for lost teeth, dental implants are the most natural and comfortable missing tooth replacement option. Indianapolis, IN restorative dentist Dr. Amy Marckese uses dental implants to help patients restore their oral health and confidence.

What are dental implants

Dental implants are like a prosthetic tooth root. They are small screws that are made out of biocompatible titanium.

How does the dental implant procedure work?

The titanium screws will be surgically implanted into the jaw bone. Once healed, typically in 3-6 months, the post will fuse with the bone for a permanent and secure restoration. Then an abundant will secure a custom designed dental crown, bridge or denture to the post for a natural and highly functional tooth.

Am I a good candidate for dental implants?

Dental implants are the ideal missing tooth replacement for most patients. Dr. Marckese will determine your eligibility during your comprehensive oral health exam. Patients who are excellent candidates have sufficient healthy bone for the implants to fuse with.

What if I do not have enough healthy bone structure for dental implants?

If your bone has begun to deteriorate and you no longer have enough bone structure to support a dental implant, Dr. Marckese may be able to coordinate a bone grafting with a local specialist. Our Indianapolis dentist office also offers dentures and dental bridges without the use of dental implants.

What are the benefits of a dental implant?

  • Reduced bone loss: like a tooth root, dental implants help to support healthy bone tissue regeneration
  • Natural appearance and function: dental implants can be custom designed to blend in with your natural smile.
  • Patients can eat and speak normally: a dental implant fits securely and permanently in the mouth, allowing patients to eat a varied healthy diet without concerns about slippage
  • No need for special daily maintenance: normal oral hygiene and regular visits to the dentist can keep your dental implant strong and healthy for a lifetime of optimal oral health
