You’re brushing your teeth like you do every night. You spit out the toothpaste, and there it is. A little pink in the sink. For a lot of people, that pink spot is easy to ignore. You figure you just brushed too hard. Or maybe your gums are just sensitive. And life is busy. You’ve got better things to worry about than a little blood. But healthy gums don’t bleed. Not even a little. If you experience bleeding gums when you brush or floss, your gums are trying to tell you something. And the good news is, if you listen now, you can usually fix the problem before it gets serious.
Your gums bleed because they’re inflamed. And they’re inflamed because bacteria has built up along your gumline. That bacteria comes from plaque, that sticky film that forms on your teeth throughout the day. When plaque isn’t removed completely, it irritates your gum tissue. Your body sends extra blood to the area to fight off the bacteria. That’s why your gums look red, feel puffy, and bleed easily.
The technical name for this early stage is gingivitis. And at this stage, the damage is completely reversible. No permanent harm has been done to the bone or tissue that holds your teeth in place.
But here’s where people get into trouble. Gingivitis doesn’t hurt. So it’s easy to ignore that little bit of blood for months or even years. And over time, that untreated inflammation can move deeper under your gumline. That’s when it becomes periodontitis, or gum disease.
So how do you know if you’ve moved past gingivitis into something more serious? Look for these signs:
Gum disease doesn’t happen overnight. It’s slow. And that’s actually dangerous, because you might not realize how much damage is happening until it’s advanced.
At Dental Spa Indianapolis, we take gum health seriously. And we don’t make you feel bad about it. Plenty of patients come to us with bleeding gums. Our job isn’t to scold. It’s to help.
Periodontal therapy is what we call the process of getting your gums back to healthy. It usually starts with a deep cleaning, also known as scaling and root planing. Unlike a regular cleaning that just focuses on the crowns of your teeth, a deep cleaning goes below the gumline to remove bacteria and smooth out the roots. This helps your gums reattach to your teeth.
We use gentle techniques. And remember, we have massage chairs, blankets, and even a massage therapist on staff to help you stay comfortable throughout the process.
After your deep cleaning, most patients notice a dramatic difference. Their gums stop bleeding. Their breath improves. And that constant “off” feeling in their mouth goes away.
Bleeding gums are not normal. But they are fixable, especially if you catch them early. If you see pink in the sink, don’t brush it off. Give us a call. Let Dr. Marckese take a look. A healthier mouth is closer than you think.
