How Long Can You Avoid a Cavity?

Learning you have a cavity usually isn’t the best of news. However, most patients will experience some form of dental decay in their lives. While you could go a few weeks without fixing a cavity in Indianapolis, IN, it’s often best to get treatment as soon as possible. Even if you brush and floss carefully, decay can continue to spread and cause damage. Early treatment is best to help prevent the need for more invasive procedures.

Treating a Cavity in Indianapolis, IN

If you have tooth decay, you may experience pain and sensitivity. If left untreated, decay could lead to worsening conditions and eventually the need for an extraction. Treating a cavity as soon as possible could help preserve your tooth. What treatment you need often depends on how deep or widespread the decay is. Your dentist will do a thorough examination of your mouth to determine which treatment could be best for you.

Dental Filling

If decay is caught early enough, a simple dental filling could fix the problem. Dental filling appointments tend to be the quickest treatment for a cavity. Your dentist may even be able to fill a cavity on the same day they identify it. Your dentist may need to numb the area, but some minor cases of decay could be treated without local anesthetic. Most dentists use a tooth-colored biocompatible resin to fill in the cavity after cleaning away the decay. Most fillings last around five to ten years, depending on how well you care for them.

Inlays, Onlays, and Crowns

If the decay is more widespread, a filling may not be enough to protect your tooth. In this case, your dentist may recommend an inlay, onlay, or dental crown. These restorative options generally work the same way, providing additional levels of protection for decay. Inlays, onlays, and crowns are usually made of a porcelain or ceramic material that is color-matched to your smile. With the use of advanced 3-D imagery and CEREC technology, your dentist may be able to provide you with restoration in one appointment.

Extraction

If decay gets too deep, you may need an extraction to help protect the rest of your oral health. Whenever possible, your dentist will work to provide treatment that will preserve your natural tooth. But if decay puts your health at risk, extraction may be necessary. With a planned extraction, you often have the option to start restoration work immediately as well. For example, your dentist may be able to extract a tooth and place an immediate implant.

If you have a cavity, it’s often best to get it filled as soon as possible. Early treatment could help prevent the need for extraction. At Dental Spa Indy, we understand that getting treatment isn’t always comfortable or enjoyable. That’s why we work hard to help you feel relaxed during your appointment.
