You’ve probably looked in the mirror and noticed a small chip in your front tooth. Or maybe one tooth is slightly darker than the others. Or there’s a tiny gap between two teeth that’s always bothered you. For a long time, fixing those little imperfections meant porcelain veneers. But there’s another option that’s faster, more affordable, and less permanent. It’s called cosmetic bonding, and it might be exactly what you’ve been looking for.

What Actually Is Bonding?
Bonding is exactly what it sounds like. We take a tooth-colored composite resin material and “bond” it directly to your tooth. Dr. Amy Marckese shapes the material to match your natural tooth. Then she uses a special light to harden it. Finally, she polishes it until you can’t tell where the bonding ends and your real tooth begins.
The whole thing sounds complicated, but here’s what you need to know. Bonding is:
- Fast: Most bonding procedures take one appointment. Usually 30 to 60 minutes per tooth.
- Affordable: Bonding typically costs a fraction of what veneers cost.
- Conservative: We don’t have to drill or remove any healthy enamel. Your tooth stays intact.
- Reversible: If you decide later you want veneers instead, you can do that. Bonding doesn’t lock you into anything.
Who Is Bonding For?
Bonding isn’t right for every situation. But it’s a great option for a lot of them.
You might be a good candidate if you have:
- A small chip or fracture in a tooth
- Minor discoloration that whitening didn’t fix
- A small gap between two teeth
- A tooth that’s slightly misshapen or smaller than the others
- An old silver filling that shows when you smile
What bonding isn’t great for? Major changes. If you want to completely transform your entire smile, veneers or crowns might be better. And bonding isn’t as stain-resistant as porcelain. Coffee drinkers and smokers should know that bonding can pick up stains over time.
What to Expect During Your Appointment
First, Dr. Marckese picks a resin shade that matches your natural teeth. She’s experienced with cosmetic dentistry, so she’ll get the color right. Next, she roughens the surface of your tooth just a tiny bit. This helps the bonding material stick. Then she applies a conditioning liquid.
After that, she applies the resin in layers. She shapes each layer to look exactly like natural tooth structure. Then she uses a special ultraviolet light to harden each layer. Once the shape is perfect, she trims and polishes the bonding until it feels smooth and looks completely natural.
The whole time, you’re sitting in one of our massage chairs. You can watch TV with headphones. Or just close your eyes and relax. No drills. No numbness unless you want it. Most patients say it’s surprisingly easy.
How to Make Your Bonding Last
Bonding isn’t forever. But with good care, it can last three to ten years. Avoid biting into really hard things with that tooth. That means no ice chewing, no hard candy, no using your teeth as tools. If you grind your teeth at night, let us know. We can make you a nightguard to protect your bonding.
Other than that, just treat it like a normal tooth. Brush, floss, and see us for regular cleanings.
A Simple Fix for a Better Smile
Cosmetic bonding won’t solve every smile problem. But for small chips, gaps, and stains, it’s one of the easiest ways to feel better about your teeth.
