What is Periodontal Dentistry?

As a quality dentist in Indianapolis, IN, Dr. Amy Marckese offers a variety of offerings at her dental office. Periodontal dentistry focuses on the gums and the prevention and treatment of gum disease. Around 75% of adults are impacted by gum disease at some point, many without even realizing it. Learn more about periodontal dentistry and why it’s important, particularly during times of stress.

The Stages of Gum Disease

There are three stages of gum disease, each of which is progressively more severe. In its base form, gingivitis, gum disease is inflammation of your gums. This is caused by plaque buildup at the gumline. The plaque releases toxins that cause the irritation and inflammation that causes gingivitis. At this stage, brushing, flossing, and deep cleaning can reverse the problem.

Next comes periodontitis. Both the bone and soft tissue deteriorate in a way that’s irreversible. Deep pockets form under the gumline, trapping more plaque and food particles. You’ll require treatment from your Indianapolis, Indiana dentist at this point no matter what. Simple brushing and flossing won’t be able to reverse it.

The final stage is considered advanced periodontitis. Your bone and soft tissue are obliterated. Your teeth may get loose and shift in your mouth, impacting the way your bite comes together. At this stage, you may risk your teeth falling out or needing to get a tooth extraction.

How Can I Tell if I Have Gum Disease?

It’s easiest to treat gum disease when it’s caught in its earliest stage. However, this is also the hardest time to tell that you even have it. Usually, you notice bleeding gums while brushing or flossing. This is easy to brush off, though, as brushing too aggressively. The following may also be indicators that you’re suffering from gum disease:

  • Gums that are sore, red, and swollen
  • Your gums receding, making your teeth look longer
  • Constant bad breath or having a bad taste in your mouth
  • Mouth sores or pus between your gums and teeth
  • Gums pulling away, creating pockets
  • Changes in your bite or loose teeth

It’s important that you see a dentist immediately if you have any of these symptoms. It’s crucial that you get treatment as soon as possible if you’re suffering from this condition. It may mean saving your teeth.

Periodontal Treatment

For the early stages of gum disease, Dr. Marckese will recommend a deep cleaning treatment called scaling and root planing. This requires removing the plaque and tartar buildup in the deep pockets of your gums.

If your gum disease is further along, you may require oral surgery or further treatment than a dentist can provide. Dr. Marckese will coordinate with a local periodontist to ensure you get the treatment you need.
